About the Department

Mental health nursing is a specialized field of nursing which focuses on working with mentally ill clients to meet their recovery goals. Nurses consider the person's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs, within the context of the individual's lived experiences in partnership with their family, significant within the broader community. The Department of Psychiatric Nursing deal with adult psychiatry, Deaddiction, adolescent and child psychiatry and community psychiatry with adequate facilities for teaching - learning activities and research work. The Psychiatric Nursing laboratory has provision for various methods of teaching - learning for the students.

Mental health nurses support clients and their families during life crises and transition periods, by liaising discretely and efficiently with a range of health care providers. Provide information and education on maintenance and restoration of mental health, coordinate care, and provide therapy required for restoration. The various mental health camps in collaboration with the department of Psychiatry is an added strength.

Aim

The aim of the mental health and psychiatric nursing program in nursing is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as registered nurse specialists, educators, and administrators in a wide variety of mental health care settings.

Vision

Whilst mental health is part of all nursing, the department believe there is a specialist role for the mental health nurse, educator and researcher to provide support for people living with acute and enduring conditions. It’s a challenging career path, but it’s also one of the most rewarding.
