About the Department
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing endowed with the infrastructure required to learn the full spectrum of Obstetrics and Gynecology nursing care for B.Sc Nursing students. Nursing Curriculum meet the norms set by the RGUHS and Indian Nursing Council (INC). Experienced nursing faculty members are an added strength to the department.
Vision
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing is envisioned to prepare competent and caring nursing professional to cater to the needs of women and children and ensure responsibility and quality in nursing service, education and research.
Mission
- Prepare nursing students to render competency-based quality care in various obstetrics and gynecological setting in concordance with legal and ethical aspects.
- Imbibe specialized knowledge and skill with appropriate attitude in students to excel in basic, expanded and extended nursing roles.
- Train students to conduct research and execute evidence-based nursing care in accordance with technological development.
Objectives
- Appreciate the trend in the field of midwifery, obstetrics and gynecology as a specialty.
- Describe the population and indicator of maternal and child Health.
- Describe the concept of biophysical, psychological and spiritual aspect of normal pregnancy, labour and puerperium.
- Provide the comprehensive Nursing care to women during reproductive period and new born.
- Integrate the concept of family centered nursing process approach in obstetric and gynecological nursing.
- Identify and analyze the deviation from normal birth process and refer appropriately
- Describe the pharmacological agent, their effects during pregnancy, child birth, puerperium, lactation and the role of nurse.
- Counsel adolescents, women and families on issues pertaining
- Describe the roll of various complementary and alternative therapies in obstetrics and gynecological Nursing.
- Incorporate evidence-based nursing practice and identify the areas of research in the field of obstetric and gynecological Nursing.
- Describe the recent advancement in contraceptive technology and birth control measures.
- Describe epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and diagnostic assessment of women with obstetrics and gynecological conditions.
- Practice infection control measures.
- Identify and manage obstetrics and neonatal emergencies as per protocol.
- Utilize recent technology and various diagnostics, therapeutic modalities in the management.
- Design the layout of specialty unit of obstetrical and gynecology.
- Demonstrate competence in caring for high risk in newborn.
- Counsel the women and families.
- Function as independent midwifery nurse practitioner.
- Perform physical, psychological, cultural & spiritual assessment
Activities
Render quality prenatal nursing care to the mother and newborn as a single unit based on midwifery model.
Educating antenatal and postnatal mothers about immunization, diet, exercises, breastfeeding etc.
Perform standardized nursing care as reflected in the current policies, procedures and protocols
Incorporate nursing process through logical / critical thinking and decision making in various obstetrics and gynecological settings.
Ensure culturally sensitive family centered holistic nursing care
Empower women along with their family to preserve and promote health through health education and counselling.
Participate in the collaborative care.
Organizing and participating in health awareness and family planning programmes
Promotion of breast feeding through BFHI policy
Execute research and innovative activities for social and professional development.

- Clinical services provided include OPD, Antenatal, Postnatal, labor room and labour OT.
The faculty of child health nursing department believes the philosophy of Sarji institute of Nursing Sciences and enthusiastically working in various aspects by collaborating with other departments and directed toward the provision of quality professional services and performs the task holistically with reference to the women, neonates and their families.
