NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian Government-sponsored public service programme conducted by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India. Popularly known as NSS it was launched in Mahatma Gandhiji’s Birth Centenary Year 1969. It is a voluntary association of young people, especially college students to work for campus-community linkages.
Objectives
- To introduce & understand the community in which they work
- To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
- To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- To develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
- To gain skills in mobilizing community participation
- To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
- To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and practice national integration and social harmony
